The Anglican Church of Bucharest, Romania

About Us

about us

Heritage and identity

We are a diverse community of faith, rooted in history, engaged locally, and united in Christ.

Now a Bucharest landmark, our unique red-brick,
neo-gothic style church was built in 1913 for
the city’s long-established Anglican community.

Our Christian faith is at our core. We belong to
the Church of England’s Diocese in Europe and
are part of the worldwide Anglican Communion.

We honor our history, which includes one of
Romania’s greatest personalities: Queen Marie
helped build the church and often worshipped here.

Part of the Parcul Gradina Icoanei neighborhood,
we seek to engage in our local community and
remember our place in God’s beautiful creation.

About our Church

We welcome all who are seeking and those who profess the Christian faith, regardless of their denomination. We are a congregation of the Church of England’s Diocese in Europe, but our community is very international and made up of people from a wide variety of Christian traditions. Children and families are always welcome.

Music is an extremely important part of our services. We sing parts of the liturgy together as well as classic Anglican hymns, accompanied by our excellent organist, Adina Cocargeanu. An Order of Service is provided for use so the liturgy is easy to follow. Our services are always in English, and you can see the Order of Service here.

An informal time of tea and coffee is held afterwards to allow people to meet and get to know each other.

Our History

For over a hundred years, our red-brick church has welcomed people from all nations to worship, learn, and grow together. Founded with the support of Queen Marie of Romania, the Church of the Resurrection has remained open through times of change and challenge, a steadfast witness of faith and hospitality in Bucharest.
Today, we are a vibrant, international Anglican community — united in prayer, service, and friendship — continuing a tradition of openness and care at the heart of the city.

Most of us, at least theoretically, think forgiveness is a good thing, but what is it really?
Are there things that are unforgiveable? For us? For God?

Come to this important dialogue with your questions and experiences. Bring your friends as well!

This Sunday, through Fr. Nevsky’s sermon, we refle This Sunday, through Fr. Nevsky’s sermon, we reflected on one of the most familiar and comforting images in the Gospel: Jesus as the Good Shepherd.

But beyond the peaceful image of green pastures, we were reminded that this is not a sentimental picture. It is one of courage, sacrifice, and deep, personal love, a shepherd who knows each sheep by name, and whose voice they recognise.

At the heart of this image is calling, vocation.
To be called by God is not reserved for a select few, nor only for ordained ministry. Each of us is called, in the midst of our daily lives, work, relationships, and responsibilities, to listen for God’s voice and to respond.

We are not called to do extraordinary things in dramatic ways, but to do ordinary things with extraordinary love.

As part of this shared calling, we also marked an important moment in the life of our church:
Richard and Monica made their declarations and were admitted as Churchwardens, taking on this ministry of service and responsibility within our community. Please keep them in your prayers as they begin this role.

The Good Shepherd is calling each of us.
May we learn to recognise His voice and follow.

Fr Nevsky's book, Ways of Seeing, was launched at Fr Nevsky's book, Ways of Seeing, was launched at @librariile_carturesti yesterday evening. Fr Nevsky spoke about the ways we can encounter God and one another in opening ourselves up to the richness of other Christian traditions, and his book offers a bridge to help Anglicans (and others) to understand better Orthodoxy.

We had a lively discussion and copies are available from Cărturești & Friends!
